Technically speaking, RoHS certification in Canada is a set of regulations that apply to the manufacture and sale of electronics & electrical equipment. RoHS stands for the Restrictions on Hazardous Substances.
The Recycling of Used Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Directive was introduced in 2006 as a way to combat the amount of electronic waste being disposed of in landfills. The goal was to ensure that electronic waste did not contain harmful materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and polyvinyl chloride.
In electronics, it is crucial to understand the RoHS (short for Restriction of Hazardous Substances) certification. This certification is nonmandatory, but if we are to sell products for the European market, either through business-to-business or business-to-consumer channels, then we need to make sure that our products also have the RoHS certification.
